Carnegie Mellon, Army Research Lab to Focus on Artificial Intelligence Under $72M Agreement

Carnegie Mellon University and the Army Research Laboratory are working to study and develop advanced algorithms, autonomy and artificial intelligence applications under a five-year, $72M agreement. The university said Monday it will lead an academic consortium with other institutions to boost A4I artificial intelligence research and development for national security and defense applications.

The research effort would help individuals make AI-supported decisions, deploy autonomous platforms and synthesize a mass of collected sensor data. The Army seeks to address gaps in human-based analysis using artificial intelligence. The partnership builds upon the previous Open Campus initiative whereby Carnegie Mellon and other institutions helped the Army employ autonomous processing and other decision-support technologies.
