The Federal Communications Commission has established innovation zones in Salt Lake City and New York City to experiment with newer wireless communication networks that include fifth-generation cellular technology. The National Science Foundation proposed the creation of the testing areas to help increase connectivity through wireless devices and services, FCC said Monday.
“We’re also establishing a process to ensure new innovators can have access to this testing resource while protecting current, licensed users,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.
FCC noted that arties with experimental program licenses can also perform non-related experiments to develop new technology as part of the initiative without causing interference to other services.
Salt Lake City will host an open wireless data-based research effort with multiple input, multiple output platforms while New York City will test an open software-defined mobile wireless system.
