Joe Klimavicz, chief information officer at the Department of Justice, has been appointed to additionally serve as DOJ’s chief data officer, Fedscoop reported Tuesday. He will concurrently function as DOJ’s CIO and CDO.
The CDO is tasked to lead a data governance body of his respective agency, as mandated under the Open, Public, Electronic and Necessary Government Data Act. The provision intends to increase the accessibility of non-sensitive government data. The Office of Management and Budget released a federal data strategy defining the CDO’s job to oversee data activities.
Klimavicz has served as CIO since joining the department in 2014. He also held the CIO position with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The executive holds 30 years of federal government experience, having formerly held scientific, technical and leadership roles with the CIA, the Department of Defense and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
