The Department of Justice has shut down 97 data centers and Joe Klimavicz, chief information officer at DOJ, said he will continue to pursue the effort to generate savings, FedScoop reported Wednesday.

“This was an economic decision,” he said at a FedInsider event. “Some of our data centers are very small, not in ideal locations, the cost of power, cost of real estate. So over five or six years we’ve estimated to have saved over $600 million by doing that. We can then use that money for modernization.”

DOJ runs approximately 12 on-premise data centers and Klimavicz said he plans to reduce that to “three core data centers that will remain in operation on-prem” and accommodate the agency’s most sensitive data.

Klimavicz also cited DOJ’s cloud adoption and the need to optimize the department’s information technology infrastructure.
