The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded initial funds to support a Purdue University-led research project that seeks to develop new semiconductor materials for storage and novel computing applications.NIST said Friday the New Materials for Logic, Memory and Interconnects effort will explore technologies to support innovation within the U.S. semiconductor market.
Semiconductors serve as base material for circuits within computer chips that compose modern computer hardware, the agency noted.
Purdue University will collaborate with the University of Texas at Dallas, Penn State University, University of Michigan and Stanford University on the research effort.
The NEW LIMITS program is funded through the Nanoelectronics Computing Research consortium, which Semiconductor Research Corp. formed last year as part of a $2.5 million contract with NIST.
NCORE’s member companies include IBM, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.
