The National Science Foundation on Tuesday rolled out a $100 million initiative aimed at closing gaps in AI compute access for researchers, students and educators nationwide.
The State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program will fund partnerships that bring together academic institutions, state and local governments, industry and philanthropic organizations to build and operate advanced scientific computing capacity.
NSF said the effort is designed to support both research and workforce development, addressing what it described as highly uneven access to AI infrastructure across different parts of the country as computational demands for scientific work continue to grow.
What Are the Details of the State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program?
Under the new program, NSF will fund the creation of AI Infrastructure Hubs — state-level or multistate regional consortia that pool contributions from research institutions, philanthropic groups, local governments and private companies to stand up shared computing resources. The agency plans to make one award per state or region, with up to 10 hubs funded in this initial round.
NSF’s role will center on catalyzing these partnerships rather than funding infrastructure outright. The agency will invest in consortium coordination, workforce training tied to AI infrastructure, and curriculum and faculty development to help institutions integrate AI tools into science instruction and research. Each hub is also expected to coordinate with regional employers to align workforce training with local labor market demand.
The hubs are encouraged to link up with national-level resources, including the NSF-led National AI Research Resource, to allow for surging or sharing compute capacity beyond what any single hub could provide, as well as to support shared datasets. NSF also pointed to ties between the new program and the White House’s Genesis Mission, a broader push to apply AI to scientific research, along with existing initiatives such as TechAccess: AI-Ready America and the Campus Research Computing Consortium.
Which Companies Have Agreed to Support the Program?
NSF said a number of private companies and philanthropic organizations — including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Dell Technologies and the Secunda Innovation Fund — have signaled intent to support hub participants. NVIDIA said it can provide support through equipping institutions with the practical means to put AI into use. That includes training materials, support for educators, real-world learning content, technical advising, and access to partner platforms and tools that help schools move beyond basic awareness toward genuine hands-on skill-building.
