Gil Alterovitz, the VA’s director of AI, said at an industry event in Washington, D.C., that the department was able to match over 9 million veterans as well as Medicare beneficiaries with experimental therapeutics and trials during the three-month AI tech sprint.

The VA made data from the tech sprint available to industry to support the development of AI tools. Alterovitz noted that the department also intends to issue a list of challenges the department encountered during the exercise.

“We were able to provide them input so that this will affect how machine learning and AI can be used for millions of people, not just this clinical trial application,” he said.

The VA is planning to release three playbooks that will provide guidance to agencies seeking to pilot AI projects.
