Alexander Acosta announced Friday that he will step down as secretary of the Department of Labor. In a letter to President Trump, Acosta said his resignation will take effect one week after his announcement and seeks to protect the administration’s agenda from any distractions.
Acosta was confirmed by the Senate for the position in April 2017. Previously, he served as head of the Department of Justice’s civil rights division, U.S. attorney in Florida and as a member of the National Labor Relations Board. Trump said in a tweet that Pat Pizzella, deputy secretary at DOL, will assume the role of acting secretary.
