The Defense Department said Tuesday Obama also designated Osterman for a promotion in rank to lieutenant general.
Osterman’s 33-year career includes roles such as Expeditionary Warfare School director, assistant division command for the 2nd and 1st Marine Division and was deployed to Afghanistan as 1st Marine Division commanding general.
He is a recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal with gold star, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star.

Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla has stepped down as the commander of the U.S. Central Command, concluding a three-year tenure in the role. He handed over the command to Adm.
