Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division, its partners and NASA are working to modify an existing diving visualization technology for space use. NSWC PCD and collaborators aim to space-tailor the existing Diver Augmented Vision Device, a head-up display system designed to provide users with high-resolution displays of sonar imagery, text messages, videos and other forms of media underwater, the U.S. Navy said Monday.

The team performs work at Aquarius Reef Base, an underwater facility that provides a training environment with buoyancy similar to that of the moon’s surface. The groups composing the team convened for NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations’ 23rd voyage at the underwater facility in Key Largo, Fla. Industry firm Coda Octopus Group developed a new version of DAVD for the NSWC-NASA collaborative mission.

“It’s exciting to see dual purpose use for a system originally designed for navy divers, and it is an honor to work with NASA,” said Allie Williams, DAVD team lead engineer.
