Space Systems Command. The agency said that Project Enigma has helped expedite the delivery of mission-critical SATCOMs.

The Space Systems Command has reported progress in its Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications system with the aid of Project Enigma.

  • Project Enigma is helping the Space System Command bolster its Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications system, a System Delta 88 official said
  • The Project Enigma platform enables a direct link to a government-hosted digital platform for contractor development environments
  • In supporting ESS, Project Enigma has helped replace legacy systems and expedited the deployment of mission-critical SATCOM capabilities

Project Enigma is transforming how Space Systems Command develops satellite communications capabilities, giving government and industry partners a secure, unified digital workspace to co-create solutions at the highest classification level, according to Dean LoNigro, chief of cyber threat response and information system security manager for the U.S. Space Force System Delta 88.

What Is Project Enigma?

Project Enigma is an initiative that links contractor development environments directly to a government-hosted digital platform to support the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications—or ESS—system. ESS is positioned succeed the Advanced Extremely High Frequency constellation as the nation’s strategic satellite communications backbone, designed to deliver enduring and survivable service. ESS was launched in January 2023 when SSC awarded General Dynamics Information Technology an other transaction authority agreement to develop a digital environment prototype for the project.

The program uses model-based systems engineering tools and a cyber-hardened, Impact Level 6-capable platform-as-a-service to enable secure collaboration between government and industry at the highest classification level. By eliminating the need for legacy physical data transfer methods, Enigma works to allow partners to co-develop, share insights, and innovate in real time.

How Has Project Enigma Helped the ESS System?

According to LoNigro, Project Enigma is driving forward the digital engineering effort behind the ESS system by solving a persistent problem: how to collaborate securely across organizational boundaries. By giving government and industry stakeholders unified access to shared platforms, the initiative allows partners to build solutions together, exchange insights, and innovate freely, all without compromising strict security controls or federal compliance demands.

Already operational and open to new participants, Enigma has become foundational to ESS development, helping ensure capabilities are built faster, smarter, and with greater integrity while upholding top-tier cybersecurity standards.
