
Mattis asked the Trump administration to establish a presidential commission that would help position the U.S. as âa leader not just in matters of defense but in the broader âtransformation of the human condition,ââ according to a May memo obtained by the publication.
The report said the Defense Department has launched efforts to advance AI and one of those is the establishment of a joint AI center in June to oversee AI initiatives across the Pentagon and service branches.
In May, the White House formed a new select committee within the National Science and Technology Council to help coordinate federal research initiatives related to AI.

The Federal Communications Commission has appointed Andy Hendrickson as the chief of its Office of Engineering and Technology. Hendrickson is transitioning from his former post of chief technology officer at the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau, the commission said Thursday.
