Senators Ask FBI for Investigation Updates on DDoS Attacks on FCC Public Comment Filing Portal

Senators Ask FBI for Investigation Updates on DDoS Attacks on FCC Public Comment Filing PortalA group of five senators has asked the FBI for updates on its investigation into distributed denial-of-service attacks that targeted the Federal Communications Commission’s electronic comment filing platform.

FCC reported on May 8 that external threat actors orchestrated the DDoS attacks to bombard the comment portal and prevented legitimate commenters to submit feedback on the agency’s rulemaking proceedings.

The lawmakers said in a letter published Wednesday that the FBI should prioritize the probe into the cyber attack that “may have denied the American people the opportunity to contribute to what is supposed to be a fair and transparent process.”

The senators called on Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to provide updates on the issue by June 23.

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) co-wrote the letter with Sens. Al Franken (D-Minnesota), Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).
