President Barack Obama intends to nominate Thomas Murphy, principal deputy undersecretary for benefits at the Department of Veteran Affairs, as VA undersecretary for benefits, the White House announced Tuesday.Murphy concurrently performs the duties of the undersecretary for benefits and oversees more than 20,000 Veterans Benefits Administration employees who provide non-medical benefits services to former military personnel.
He previously served as director of compensation service and director of the San Juan, Puerto Rico regional office at VA.
Murphy also worked at The Home Depot as merchandise planning director and at Qwest Communications as senior tactical planning manager.
His career also includes time as logistics manager, administrative officer, training manager, staffing specialist and chief of employee services at the Defense Department.
Murphy served for 15 years in the Colorado National Guard and six years in the Marine Corps Reserve before he retired from military service with the rank of major.
