Defense Secretary James Mattis has said Iran has been involved in several destabilization activities in the Middle East that include the country’s ballistic missile support to the Houthis against Saudi Arabia, DoD News reported Saturday.
Mattis told reporters Friday about Iran’s support to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and involvement with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
He also commended the presentation of Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, about the Middle Eastern country’s illegal missile weapons program.
“What we are doing in that region is standing by allies and partners, and we’re on one hand exposing, on the other hand helping them build their own capability to reject Iranian influence,†Mattis added.
His remarks came two months after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that President Donald Trump intended to decertify Iran under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act signed in 2015.
