White House: Federal Executive Actions, Private Sector Projects Eye Renewable Energy Integration With Power Grid


WhiteHouseThe White House has introduced federal executive actions as well as pilot projects and investment commitments by 33 public and private sector entities that aim to facilitate the integration of renewable energy resources with the U.S. power grid.

The Obama administration announced the private and federal sector actions and related programs in conjunction with the Summit on Scaling Renewable Energy and Storage with Smart Markets hosted by the White House Thursday, according to a news release published Thursday.

Federal executive actions include the General Services Administration’s plan to issue a request for information on potential energy storage platforms for peak load management and emergency backup purposes and the Energy Department’s pilot projects that aim to facilitate access and sharing of energy data.

Other executive actions include a White House Council of Economic Advisers report on technical and economic opportunities with regard to the integration of renewable energy with the power grid as well as pilot projects by the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.

Power companies, grid operators and community groups in more than eight states also announced 16 initiatives that seek to deploy demand response programs, smart meters and smart water heaters.

Corporate and public organizations with such programs include:

  • California Independent System Operator
  • California Public Utilities Commission
  • The Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Community Storage Initiative in partnership with Siemens
  • Con Edison
  • Duke Energy
  • Green Button Alliance
  • Green Mountain Power
  • Indianapolis Power & Light Co.
  • Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
  • NextEra Energy’s Florida Power & Light
  • Pacific Gas & Electric
  • Portland General Electric
  • San Diego Gas & Electric
  • Southern California Edison
  • U.S. Green Building Council

According to the report, investors, developers and manufacturers have also announced 17 investment commitments and projects in support of smart meter and storage program implementation.

  • Vaughn Thermal Corp.
