Five Projects Receive $1.5M Research Funding from NSF, CASIS; Grace Wang Comments


International Space StationThe National Science Foundation and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space have awarded five projects a total of $1.5 million in funds to conduct fluid dynamics investigations in the International Space Station’s U.S. National Laboratory.

CASIS and NASA will jointly implement the hardware aspect of the research and provide the awardees access to the ISS National Laboratory for microgravity studies in the fields of science and engineering, CASIS said Thursday.

“In the microgravity environment of space, NSF grantees will be able to investigate fluid dynamics phenomena and processes not observable on Earth to further our scientific understanding that will lead to advances to benefit all Americans,” said Grace Wang, NSF acting assistant director for engineering.

CASIS and NSF solicited proposals to assess fluid flow phenomena such as capillary flow, diffusion, interfacial behavior, multiphase flow, separation and surface tension.

Awardees are:

  • Joel Plawsky from Rensselaer Polytech Institute
  • Michael Louge from Cornell University
  • Eric Furst from University of Delaware
  • Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz from University of California-Santa Barbara 
  • Paul Steen from Cornell University
