House lawmakers have approved through a voice vote a bill that would reorganize the Department of Homeland Security‘s cybersecurity functions, The Hill reported Monday.
The legislation would elevate DHS’ National Protection and Programs Directorate into a standalone agency from its current status as a component within department headquarters.
NPPD would be renamed as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and would oversee cyber and critical infrastructure protection under the bill.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, is spearheading the NPPD reorganization push in Congress.
